Why is cricket not there in the Olympics?

Cricket is one of the most popular sports in the world, but has no place in the Olympics. It was shown together at an exhibition four years ago. But cricket did not make sense and has not appeared at the Olympics since.

Cricket was tested as part of the Paris Olympics in 1900. The attempt failed. Many factors, including the fact that many countries in the world do not play, prevent cricket from being played again in the Olympics.

Cricket has many fans and is probably second only to football in that respect. But the game does not seem to be successful when it comes to the Olympics.

Although cricket is played in 105 countries around the world, only a few teams have cricket status. World Cup (sports betting) is also only for teams 10-12.

Cricket’s only appearance at the Olympics

Cricket was added to the game at the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens.

However, at the Paris Games in 1900, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands and France decided to participate. The situation changed when Belgium and the Netherlands pulled out of the games. France played Great Britain, where the visitors lost the tournament.

Needless to say, I haven’t played in the Olympics since.

Factors working against cricket’s inclusion

Despite being a huge fan worldwide, the sport has failed to gain popularity in Olympic host nations. The host nations, which are also non-cricket nations, did not sponsor the sport to participate in the prestigious four-year tournament.

The time factor also works in favor of Cricket's bid for Olympic inclusion. Despite the revolution of T20 in the last decade, the major events of the game require a great deal of time and energy to play on a grand scale in the Summer Games.

Another reason for boycotting cricket in the Olympics is economic. Long games that require a lot of technical support and only a handful of countries interested in watching the game do not add greatly to anything.

While the sport may eventually gain popularity in many host countries, the current scenario still severely discourages new entrants from entering the fray of international cricket.

Low-cost clubs and affiliates have to play fewer games, while high-cost clubs from India, England, Australia and New Zealand have high-cost tours and tournaments brought into the community.

The full cricket calendar is another reason that cricket’s participation in the Olympics is delayed. The emergence of T20 leagues across the globe has already crippled players’ endurance and with so much money pouring into private leagues, the national mission sometimes takes second place.

How can cricket be a part of the Olympics?

Cricket hasn't participated in the Olympics, but the sport has submitted a quarterly tournament offer. The host country of the Olympic Games may bid to participate in the game based on the cricket culture of the host city, and such a decision is not binding on future guests.

This does not mean that even if Paris bids for cricket in the 2024 match, the sport should be included in Los Angeles, which hosts the event in 2028.
